Part 1 of video. #ArmourMuseumBloemfontein #TempeBaseFreeState #SouthAfrica South Africa: http://www.namibweb.com/indexsa.htm The SA Armour Museum is situated in Tempe, Bloemfontein, which is one of the country’s largest cities. Affectionately known as the city of roses, Bloemfontein has a charming character all of its own, and is a delight to visit as a family, thanks to its rich history and heritage. Outside, there is the Armoured Fighting Vehicles exhibition, which is always a favourite. Tanks and other sturdy combat vehicles create an impressive display of what the South African Armoured Corps had to offer. The SA Armour Museum is dedicated to preserving the integrity and the history of the South African Armoured Corps (SAAC), as well as of armour in a broader sense. Its exhibitions include an indoor display, outdoor display, the Garrison Hall, a vehicle hanger (complete with a number of restored vehicles that are, once again, in working order), the poignant Wall of Remembrance, and more. Garrison Hall is a function area that caters for up to 80 delegates or guests, and hosts a number of lectures, films and fund-raising events throughout the year. The museum’s shop, aptly named The Gun Barrel, is brimming with awesome finds like plastic models, authentic uniforms, and other little gems that are sure to fascinate young and old alike. The Research Library is adjacent to the museum. On its shelves, those with a keen interest in history can discover books, periodicals, and documents that are all about warfare and equipment in the South African context. The idea of instituting a Museum and Research Library for the South African Armoured Corps started as early as 1994 and was officially approved by the Chief of the SA Army on the 12th October 1995. Approval for the use of a historical building located in the lines of the School of Armour Tempe was granted in April 1995. This building houses the indoor displays. Unfortunately however no funds were approved for the museum, although the Department of Public works restored the building. A number of fund raising projects were launched and with donations from various private business and arms manufacturers, funds were raised for the manufacture of a number of showcases and other items. An appeal to all members of the Armoured Corps and other interested persons resulted in a number of different items being donated to the museum. With great success and with the assistance of personnel from the School of Armour the museum was officially opened by the then Chief of the Army Lt Gen Reg Otto, SD, SM, MMM, on the 13th of September 1996 to coincide with the 50th anniversary celebration of the South African Armoured Corps. The historical building dates back from the years 1902-1904 and stands on historical grounds in Tempe, the farm on which British Occupying Forces garrisoned after the occupation of Bloemfontein on 14th March 1900. Between 1902 and 1904 three large pre-fabricated wood and corrugated zinc buildings were erected for this purpose. Accompanying these hospital wards were pre-fabricated administration blocks and nurses quarters. These hospitals also cared for woman and children of the concentration camp, (Anglo Boer war 1899-1902). These concentration camps were situated adjacent to this area. The British Garrison used the hospital complex until 1912-13. With the establishment of the SA Union Defence Force in 1910, these hospitals, in 1912, were declared a Military Medical Service Training Facility. The hospitals also functioned as military hospitals until closure in October 1921. In 1923 the facilities were sold to the Bloemfontein City Council for the price of £ 17 500,00 and were then used as isolation hospitals during several epidemics, such as the polio epidemic of 1934 and 1943. In 1985 part of the buildings from that era were demolished to make way for new buildings from for the School of Armour. In 1995 the historical building was declared a National Monument. © Exploring Namibia TV Soundtrack: Sonic Pogo by Vans in Japan Facebook: NAMIBIA: https://www.facebook.com/groups/namibia.namibia SOUTH AFRICA: https://www.facebook.com/groups/south.africa.rsa EQUIPMENT | ОБОРУДОВАНИЕ: AERIAL: DJI PHANTOM 3 PRO | DJI MAVIC PRO PHONES: IPHONE XR | XIAOMI REDMI NOTE VIDEO CAMERAS: SONY HDR-CX360E | PANASONIC HC-X1 ✩F A C E B O O K | ФБ ►https://www.facebook.com/ExploringNamibiaTV ✩B L O G | БЛОГ ►http://sa-nam-news.blogspot.com ✩V K EN TV | ГРУППА ВК ►https://bit.ly/2I3ws4P ✩T W I T T E R | ТВИТТЕР ►http://twitter.com/TravelToNamibia ✩PURCHASE VIDEO P5 | ПОРТФОЛИО P5 ►https://bit.ly/2Vvbb6L ✩W E B S I T E | САЙТ ►www.traveltonamibia.com ✩C O N T A C T | КОНТАКТЫ ►info@traveltonamibia.com ✩W H A T S U P T E X T | ВОТСАП ТЕКСТ: +264 817 666862
