What is the 5-second rule? It is a technique developed and promoted by Mel Robbins and built on the principles of neuroscience and psychology. It involves counting backwards from 5 in order to overcome autopilot behaviours. You can use it to distract your brain from changing its mind when you want to: • Overcome procrastination • Break bad habits, including thought habits • Interrupt self-doubt and negative self-talk • Push yourself to take the actions that will change your life When we decide to do something, our brains sometimes rationalise us out of the idea. It may be because we are doubting our abilities, we are fearful of the action or outcome, or we overanalyse things. Moving out of a comfort zone is uncomfortable. Mel Robbins describes it well: “The 5 Second Rule is simple. If you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill it. The moment you feel an instinct or a desire to act on a goal or a commitment, use the Rule. When you feel yourself hesitate before doing something that you know you should do, count 5-4-3-2-1-GO and move towards action.” So count down from five next time you are faced with any of these challenges: Getting out of bed Going exercising Eating comfort food Sending a difficult email Putting your hand up to speak at a big meeting Getting the guts together to introduce yourself to someone important When you get angry By counting down from five, you ensure that you take action and don’t sabotage your efforts for change by convincing yourself otherwise.
