Backpacking Big South Fork in Winter with a Tarp: Hiking 4 Days, 3 Nights

Backpacking in Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Dates: November 21 - 24, 2015. Distance to cover: 55 miles. Time to do it: 4 days, 3 nights. Weather: Nighttime temperatures to a low of 22 degrees. All with a tarp, not a tent (because that's how I roll, lol). My plan was a long 55-mile loop through Big South Fork and Pickett State Park beginning at Bandy Creek Visitor's Center. I succeeded, although I spent a few tense hours lost in Pickett State Park, where my two guidebooks and two maps did not coincide with the trails that I could see. (Blazing notes: the John Muir Trail is easy to follow, even though it crosses and recrosses horse trails. Things are more difficult in Pickett State Park, where the trails and signage are not as well maintained. Even the turtle-shaped blazes for the Sheltowee Trace were only a little help, since more attention is being paid to the news southern terminus of the trail, rather than the older one that I was on. Get the most up-to-date trail information that you can find!) The hike itself was great. The park's outstanding natural features kept me from every getting bored. I'll be returning to Big South Fork and Pickett State Park soon.
