We all know about his family, his crazy dad Lavar, and his brother Lonzo. Since the launch of his stardom LaMelo has taken an unconventional path to the NBA. From child prodigy star at Chino Hills, to playing in Lithuania for the Los Angeles Ballers of the Junior Basketball Association, then Spire Academy, then in the National Basketball League (NBL) in Australia there’s no doubt that Ball has been mentally and physically preparing to be the #1 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft for some time. The NBL’s Next Stars program, offers rising stars like LaMelo an alternative pathway to the NBA and we think we took full advantage of his platform. As a 6’8 point guard with impressive ball handling skills, unmatched feel for the game and pure NBA ready raw talent, Ball has earned the #1 pick spot in our most recent 2020 NBA Mock Draft. Ball finds ways to impact the game regardless of if he is having an off night, but his NBA ready strengths are what positioned him as the projected #1 pick. As an offensive facilitator and play initiator he has the potential to make an immediate impact to any NBA franchise. His pace and feel for the game is far more advanced than other guards projected in this 2020 NBA Draft class. Comparisons to his brother Lonzo are fair, but their only similarities are their passing skills and rebounding instincts. LaMelo’s elite ball handling capabilities are more comparable to Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, which makes him extremely hard to guard due to a crafty set up game that demands the constant attention of on-ball and help side defenders. With defensive strategies mostly focused on Ball, he’s able to consistently make plays by primarily distributing to teammates or scoring at all three levels, at the rim, mid range, or from distance. In Australia, Ball was able to polish his skillset in pick and roll situations, while proving he can handle defensive pressure in the full and half court setting. During his 15 games with the Illawarra Hawks, Ball was used in Pick and roll situations 32.5% of the time. In 95 possessions Ball scored 84 total points (0.884 PPP) in the pick in roll. He also played to his strengths as a facilitator by tallying 89 total assists in just 15 games. The most impressive strength LaMelo possesses is his touch and creativity. He has taken and made some legendary shots and is documented making floaters from a step or two inside the three-point line. While Ball was sculpting his game mentally and physically filling into his frame during AAU/high school, he stood out for two reasons even though he was a lot smaller and playing against older competition. 1. His offensive creativity. 2. His confidence, swagger, and demeanor.
