Our field has become very fragmented over the years, such that there are now hundreds of different models of therapy, each with its own conceptualization of what creates powerful change. In this interview, Bruce Ecker explains why he believes that the science of memory reconsolidation might serve as the unifying framework we have been missing, one based on how the brain actually updates its old 'emotional learnings,' thereby becoming free of problematic patterns. With a deep understanding of what the brain requires to unlock this innate process of relearning, therapists can become equipped to more seamlessly integrate between the techniques from various modalities, without the work feeling disjointed, but rather simply enriched. Bruce calls this use of memory reconsolidation in the context of therapy the 'therapeutic reconsolidation process', or TRP. It is our belief that if experiential therapists can became grounded in the foundational aspects of the therapeutic reconsolidation process (TRP), then not only will doing so support their capacity to integrate between models, but will also enhance their capacity to use techniques from their core model in a more refined and consistently effective manner.
